What Are Optical Brightened Fabrics?

Optical brightened fabrics are textile fabrics that have been treated with optical brighteners or fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs). These chemical compounds absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as blue light. The fabric appears whiter and brighter to the human eye due to this treatment. In contrast to bleach, which removes stains and discolorations, optical brighteners enhance the natural whiteness of the fabric.

The Science Behind Optical Brighteners

These agents work by converting invisible UV light into visible blue light through a process known as fluorescence. When optical brighteners are applied to a fabric, they create a blue hue that counteracts the yellowish tint that can make fabrics look dull and aged. What Material Is An Optical Brightener?
